“It all started as a drunken bar bet 4 years ago,” says writer/director
Jeff Ebright.
“I was pounding back a few shots of bourbon in Partners
Bar when my friend Greg, the bartender, asked me what I was going to
do next. I had written a few books of short stories, and so he suggested
turning one of the stories into a short film. I agreed and told him as long
as he let me have the bar to shoot it, I would. And wouldn't you know
it? The silly bastard said yes.”
So begins the journey of The League of
Extraordinary Alcoholics. Although the main characters are simple working
stiffs by day, under cover of night these men and women (with the help
of many adult beverages) become hammered heroes with intoxicated
super powers.

The roll call reads like a list of fallen 12-steppers: White Lightning, Black
Russian, Dead Drunk, Captain Mumble, Rum Runner, Party Girl and
Bourbon Brave. No matter if their powers were obtained through
accident, genetics or divine intervention, alcohol is the key that binds
them and makes them a team. And what terror brings them together
again? Well, the film’s official title -- “THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY
ALCOHOLICS VS THE HORDE OF REALLY CREEPY UNDEAD ZOMBIE FLESH
EATERS” -- should provide the answer.
“The whole plot is drunken
heroes fighting a seemingly unstoppable legion of the undead,”
admits
the director and blatant chain smoker.

“I’ve always loved zombie movies, so why not write about what I know
and love?”
Originally entitled “The Stupor Friends: Dawn of the Drunk”
(The Stupor Friends name was copyrighted and had to be changed), Jeff
Ebright has found fertile ground with a comedy/horror feature that
depends on sight gags, double entendres, nudity and gore to entertain
the audience. Filmed for just under $25,000 with the majority of the cast
from the local acting community, The LXA revolves around a functioning
neighborhood drinking establishment, Partners Bar in Dayton, Ohio. Owner
George Mescher allowed the cast and crew to use his 20 year old bar
during two consecutive months on weekends and only after hours. That
meant filming started at 3AM and went until the cases of energy drinks
and Mountain Dew were exhausted.

“It got rough at times, no doubt,” Jeff shrugged. “But, Hell, we got to
use a great bar that was filled with production value worth thousands of
dollars for free. There’s no substitute for a real bar with a kick-ass
atmosphere. Besides, I have a tab there.”
During the shooting schedule,
the most difficult night of filming was clearly the evening when the
zombie horde invaded Partners. Over three dozen extras besieged the
family bar on a chilly night in September. And the majority of them
showed up before last call to brace against the cold with a few rounds.
“Im not going to say the dead weren’t in good spirits that evening, but
the police did stop by to say ‘Hi!’ more than once.”

The director smiled and confessed, “Okay, quite a few of the horde were
shitfaced. But when you’re making a zombie movie, drunkenness helps
the believability when you’re trying to act dead. The drunk and the
undead have a very similar walk.”
Scheduled for an April 2009 release,
this low-budget movie boasts cameos from Lloyd Kaufman (Troma
founder and creator of the Toxic Avenger) and actress Monique Dupree
(Stand By Me, American Gangster, Bikini Bloodbath 3). The League of
Extraordinary Alcoholics VS The Horde of Really Creepy Undead Zombie
Flesh Eaters is a movie that will never win any Academy Awards, but has
already won the approval of those who have gotten an advanced peak.
It has been described as crass, crude, silly and sophomoric. But that was
the director’s goal.

“I created The LXA for the sheer enjoyment of fans who love the
comedy/horror genre. I wanted to make a flick that winks at the
audience and doesn’t try to force feed shitty jokes and CGI down their
throats. I wanted a movie people could pop into their DVD player and
enjoy while getting plastered.”
Jeff chuckled, “I even built two different
drinking games into the film. Our production motto says it all: If it ain’t
fun, we ain’t doin’ it!”
