A ton of new images from THE MUMMY 3 have been uploaded online. THE MUMMY: TOMB
OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR takes place in the far east, with trouble-seeking father-and-son
duo Rick (Fraser) and Alex O'Connell (Ford) who unearth the mummy of the first Emperor of
Qin (Li) -- a shape-shifting entity who was cursed by a wizard (Yeoh) centuries ago. This
new Mummy sequel is written by Miles Millar & Alfred Gough. Directed by Rob Cohen, the
film stars Brandon Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello (who has replaced Rachel Weisz), Michelle
Yeoh, John Hannah, Luke Ford, Isabella Leong, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang and Albert Kwan.
It looks like THE MUMMY 3 is losing one it its key stars. According to the Hollywood
Reporter, Rachel Weisz has dropped out of the new MUMMY sequel for Universal Pictures.
The Oscar-winning actress has opted not to join her returning co-star Brendan Fraser in
the China-set action-adventure, which will be helmed by Rob Cohen and will co-star Jet Li.
The studio cited scheduling conflicts for Weisz's decision not to reprise her role. Oh well, I
guess they could aways just kill her character off by some sickness, right? In THE MUMMY
3, Alex, the trouble-seeking son of adventurers Rick and Evy O'Connell, unearths the
mummy of the first Emperor of Qin.
According to moviehole.net, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will indeed return for the
next "Mummy" film. THE MUMMY 3 will be set many years - apparently the 1940s - after
the events of the last film, "The Mummy Returns". Though O'Connell (Fraser) and Evelyn
(Weisz) are still very much in the picture, it'll be up to their grown-up son, Alex, to do the
Mummy mashing. The new Mummy - Yep, Arnold Vosloo will not be returning- will
apparently be the desiccated remains of China's first uber-Emperor Qin Shihuang, who
wants revenge on those who turned his team into stone all those years ago. [You can
read a review of the script at IESB]. Stephen Sommers, the force behind the first two
films, isn't expected to return as director this time around.
We're unsure of a third Mummy film has been officially announced but there have been
ideas and rumors floating around the net. Moviehole recently had a chat with Oded Fehr,
the actor who played Ardeth Bay in the Mummy remake and its sequel-
“I’m not involved [in “The Mummy 3”]. The person that wrote it, created it, tells me they’
re doing a third one. They were writing it [when I spoke to him], so I don’t know where it
is now. I believe it’s only going to involve Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s characters,
of the old movies, and everyone else [in it] is going to be new. It’d mean having to grow
his hair long for the part if Ardeth Bay was required back. “That was a lot of work – a lot
of hair product, effort, and shower time. It’s a lot quicker now [that it’s short]" -Oded
Well it looks like we may not be able to see Oded return as Ardeth Bay, but he is still set
to come back for the new Resident Evil film.
