‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ writer-directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert recently took part in The Hollywood Reporter Writers Roundtable (alongside Jordan Peele, Rian Johnson, etc.), during which they revealed an interesting anecdote about a pitch they received from Jim Carrey before they had even made their first film ( “Swiss Army Man”, which was released in 2016).

Kwan explained that Carrey had just seen “Paranormal Activity” when he reached out and told the filmmakers it inspired an idea. Kwan continued, “He was like, ‘I haven’t seen anyone do this – but with comedy. And I have this great idea.'” Carrey went on to explain that they had some weird experiences – like doors opening and people getting hurt – during the filming of ‘Dumb and Dumber’ at the Stanley Hotel (where Stephen King got the idea for “The Shining”). Kwan clarified:[Carrey continued], ‘We’re going to shoot Dumb and Dumber To, and I want you to do a horror-comedy with footage found on set. While we’re shooting, you’re going to make a feature film, a behind-the-scenes video that slowly becomes a horror movie. We’re like, ‘OK, we’re in. It’s incredible.’ We wrote a whole plan and we were really excited.”

Unfortunately, the idea ultimately didn’t pan out, as the producers were skeptical that they could convince the studio to let them shoot a movie while another film was being shot. So, sadly, we’ll never see the meta movie that could have been.

Our editor got the interview of her dreams, I turned Dave Bautista into an ugly square Minecraft character, and Marcy’s Diary is a delightful deep dive into one of Amphibia’s fan-favorite characters. There’s a lot to unpack that we’ve been talking about this week, and since it’s Thursday, it’s time to do it.

Five More Cosplays I Hope Dave Bautista Has Hid in His Closet

Duke Bautista

Dave Bautista is still vying for a role in a Gears of War movie, even donning the armor in cosplay to show his enthusiasm. Naturally, this prompted Features Editor Jade King to write all about a bunch of other games it would be perfect for, such as Minecraft and Katamari Damacy. Imagine a square-headed Dave Bautista tackling wood for two hours to build a small log cabin. But you don’t have to, we made it a reality. Well, the square head bit.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult Talk Menu, Fear and Hair Dye

Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult in a junket for The Menu

Editor-in-chief Stacey Henley reviewed The Menu this month, an all-new horror-comedy mishmash starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicholas Hoult, but she also got to talk to the cast about what drew them to this film and even the ATJ fandom’s obsession with her hair.

“[Changing my hair] is my favorite part of my job,” she said. “I realized early on that the characters are real to me. I just have no interest in playing myself, really. So the first thing that comes together is ‘what’s their face when they’re alone, and then what do they look like?’

Marcy’s diary is cringe-worthy, and I’d expect nothing less from a Weeaboo teen

Marcy Poggers

Amphibia has its own related book, Marcy’s Novel. It hasn’t been released yet, but Jade got her hands on it and found the main character writing things like Poggers without irony while gushing about niche JRPGs and classic anime. It’s a little cringebut she’s a nerdy teenager with a bunch of equally nerdy hobbies, so when we dive into the most personal glimpse we’ve had so far, it’s not too surprising that we find that these passions manifest themselves shamelessly.

There are doodles next to the words, orange lines to underline paragraphs and sentences, and illustrations of her and her friends hugging. It’s genuinely adorable, but it’s also a callback to our own childhoods, prompting Jade to reminisce about plotting the Kingdom Hearts 2 box to display on her fridge. We have all been there. I spent hours with my dad building a model Dalek in the garden.

Atreus is supposed to be boring, that’s the whole point

Atreus Ragnarok

Speaking of cringe-worthy teenagers, Atreus gets slammed for being boring again. Of course it can be, but that’s kinda the goal. He’s a child struggling to piece together his own identity while his closed-off father struggles with his own sense of self, the two mending broken bridges and finally finding understanding in each other. As Jade writes, Atreus has come a long way and we got to see his journey, the warts and all. He’s gone from the annoying and often abrasive persona he was in the 2018 game to a voice of optimism, trying to free himself from a world of bloodshed and destruction. It’s bound to be a little tedious at times, but that makes it all the more believable.

Rainbow Six UAE

A Rainbow Six Siege tournament was due to be held in the United Arab Emirates, only to be canceled amid accusations of sportswashing and a poor human rights and LGBTQ+ record in the country. Issy Van Der Velde, Interdepartmental Editor, and Khee Hoon Chan, Freelancer spoke to several developers and analysts about this announcementNiko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad stating that “this is by no means a new issue and we expect it to be something that will continue to come up, especially for these international tournaments”.

“It’s always sad to see the region where I’ve spent my whole life and where I’ve seen tremendous progress being crushed based on unfair stereotypes,” Jamal said. “Compared to most Gulf countries, the UAE is much more tolerant and liberal despite what some of its outdated laws might suggest. It seems to me that it is fueled by stereotypes than the rest of the world, mainly Caucasians, have from this region.

It sees the return of a horror icon.

Finally, the weekend is here!

And if you stay tonight, there are some solid movies playing on TV.

Here are your options.

Deadpool – E4 – 9pm

Ryan Reynolds is the mercenary with a mouth.

The A-Team – Comedy Central – 9pm

Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and a stage-stealing Sharlto Copley revive the classic TV show.

Zombieland: Double Tap – Movie 4 – 9pm

The long-awaited sequel to the hit 2009 zombie comedy.

The Expendables – Classic Turner Movies – 9pm

Sylvester Stallone directs and stars in this throwback to older action films.

Shut In – Horror Xtra – 9pm

Naomi Watts leads the cast in this psychological horror with a meager 5% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid – TG4 – 9:05 PM

It’s Friday, which means TG4 is showing a western.

Countdown – RTÉ2 – 9:35 p.m.

Not the long-running quiz show, but 2019’s horror about a killer app starring Elizabeth Lail (Netflix’s You).

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Virgin Media One – 10:15 p.m.

This superhero sequel starring Andrew Garfield as the titular web-slinger is widely considered the worst Spider-Man movie.

Hellbound: Hellraiser II – Horror Xtra – 22:50

Our pick for tonight is the sequel to the 1987 classic hellraiser.

In the follow-up, teenage Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) is admitted to a mental hospital following the traumatic ordeal she went through in the original.

Unfortunately for her, her doctor (Kenneth Cranham) becomes obsessed with the occult and ends up freeing the Cenobites again.

Much more sprawling and messy than the first Hellraiser, Hellbound at least gives Doug Bradley’s villainous Pinhead more screen time.

It also builds on the mythology of the original, as well as its incredibly crude special effects.

Eagle versus Shark – Film4 – 11pm

This romantic comedy was writer-director Taika Waititi’s directorial debut.

US Marshals – Classic Turner Movies – 11:10 PM

Tommy Lee Jones is reprising the character he won an Oscar for playing in The Fugitive for this much less gripping spinoff. Wesley Snipes and Robert Downey Jr are in support.

Armageddon – ITV4 – 23:15

Michael Bay’s hugely entertaining sci-fi disaster flick starring Ben Affleck and Bruce Willis.

Grudge Match – Comedy Central – 11:20 p.m.

This sports comedy sees Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone play aging boxers who step into the ring for one last fight.

Leap Year – RTÉ One – 11:40 p.m.

Amy Adams travels to Ireland in this much-mocked romantic comedy.

After more than a decade of silence in the industry, the director and animator Henry Selick makes waves again with his new movie Wendell and savage, which reached Netflix’s “most-watched” charts around the world. An animated stop-motion horror comedy in collaboration with Jordan Peele, Wendell and savage effectively marks Slick’s sixth film as a director.

Specialized in stop-motion animation, having fallen in love with the art after seeing The Adventures of Prince Ahmed and Sinbad’s 7th Voyage As a young boy, Selick was responsible for some of the world’s most beloved and critically acclaimed animated classics, including James and the giant peach, The Nightmare Before Christmasand Coraline.

It could be argued that Selick doesn’t always get the attention he deserves, which could be because his name is somewhat overshadowed by his more established frequent collaborator Tim Burton (a point Selick himself said is unfair). Nevertheless, we have decided to come back to his impressive repertoire and to classify all the films he has made, from The Nightmare Before Christmas by Wendell & Wild.

5/5 monkey-bone

monkey bone
20th century workshops

At the time of its release, monkey-bone was considered a huge disappointment for Selick and the film’s star Brendan Fraser. It bombed at the box office and was panned by critics. monkey-bone sees a carefree cartoonist, played by Fraser, get sucked into his own comic strip, resulting in a bizarre mish-mash of live action and stop-motion animation shenanigans. The animation was impressive and captivating, and the live action and voice acting were solid, featuring the talents of Whoopi Goldberg, Rose McGowan, Bridget Fonda, Bob Odenkirk, and John Turturro. Unfortunately, the script lacked focus and relied more on crude one-off gags than any solid form of storytelling or character development. Additionally, the tone was uneven, making it difficult to establish a target audience. monkey-bonealthough not terrible, is certainly a rare misfire for the usual Selick fantastic.

4/5 James and the giant peach

James and the giant peach
Buena Vista Pictures

For millions of children around the world, James and the giant peach will hold a special place in their hearts. For many, it will be because of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel which came out in 1961 and is still loved by children to this day. But for others, it’ll be because of Selick’s 1996 stop-motion/live-action musical adaptation. Co-produced by Burton, their animation style and macabre wit are all over the place. While arguably slightly brighter than much of their other work, it certainly doesn’t shy away from the darker elements so common in their and Dahl’s best projects, and is a joy to watch for adults and children alike. That said, the animated segments are by far the film’s strong points, with the opening live-action segment coming across as mostly forgettable and pointless. James and the giant peach features a strong lead voice performance from Paul Terry as James, along with outstanding supporting performances from Richard Dreyfuss and Susan Sarandon. The film is now finding new life on Disney+.

3/5 Wendell and savage

Wendell and savage
netflix

By far the newest entry on the list, having only been released just in time for Halloween 2022, this Netflix collab sees Selick directing a script he co-wrote with Jordan Peele. Wendell and savage is a gruesome tale of two evil demon brothers, who enlist an angsty teenage girl struggling with her own demons to summon them to the land of the living. Without giving too much away on the plot, we can expect a lot of love, loss, and betrayal in this laugh-out-loud yet poignant film. After 10 years of industry silence, by The Hollywood Reporterit was a fantastic return to form for Selick, and critics raved about the beautiful stop-motion animation and array of multi-dimensional characters we meet along the way.

2/5 Coraline

stop motion horror movie Coraline
Focus characteristics

Selick’s darkest film, Coraline was a 2009 stop-motion animated horror film. For all intents and purposes, Coraline was marketed as a children’s film. While the promotional artwork was a little darker than, sayFrozenit doesn’t even begin to suggest the terrors that await any young viewer about to watch Coraline. Whether The Lion King taught children to fear their uncles or even their siblings, Coraline taught children to fear their own parents. Beautifully but chillingly animated in stop-motion, Coraline encounters another version of her parents in another realm. Unhappy with her former parents, these new ones seem to treat her well, that is, until she refuses to be mutilated by them. After that, all bets are off as they spy on her, threaten her, and attempt to kill her, all while looking like the parents she should be able to trust as a child. The film was a huge hit with critics and won Annie Awards for Best Music in an Animated Feature Production, Best Character Design in an Animated Feature Production, and Best Production Design in an Animated Feature Production, and received nominations for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. and a Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature.

1/5 The Nightmare Before Christmas

Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas
Pictures of Walt Disney

It had to be, didn’t it? Selick’s feature debut as a director remains his most beloved to date. This collaboration with Burton, who wrote the story, while Selick directed, has garnered a huge cult following since its initial release in 1993. Fantastic stop-motion animation combined with a dark but catchy soundtrack by Danny Elman gives life to this Jack Skellington story. (the King of Halloween) and his new obsession with Christmas and his plot to kidnap Santa Claus, in a way that may have brought the biggest smiles to viewers of all ages. With an impressive score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Nightmare Before Christmas is often considered one of the greatest animated films of all time, with famed film critic Roger Ebert calling the visual effects “groundbreaking as star wars” and Rolling Stone magazine describing it as “74 minutes of timeless cinematic magic”.

If you didn’t know who Tudor Dixon was before August, few would blame you. A former steelworks manager and Right wing A cable news host, Dixon was a little-known candidate in a crowded field for Michigan’s Republican primary race for governor when she announced her candidacy in May 2021.

But after several of his contestants were disqualified (for including fake signatures on nomination petitions, mostly) and after earning coveted endorsements (including that of Donald Trump), Dixon took the lead to win the primary. , preparing her to face off. with outgoing Governor Gretchen Whitmer in November. The race between the two should be tight.

A breast cancer survivor who said vaccination should be a “personal choice,” Dixon said his choice to run was prompted by his anger at Whitmer’s strict COVID shutdown policies. She has championed staunchly right-wing positions on issues such as abortion (she is against it), gender identity education in schools (she calls it “indoctrination”) and the presidential election of 2020 (she disputed the results).

But long before her foray into conservative politics, Dixon was briefly an actress. Between 2008 and 2012, Dixon starred in several low-budget horror productions made in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Much of it has now been removed from the internet (or was never available online in the first place), but the easiest to find in its entirety is the gloriously steamy and deeply unserious teen-sex-horror movie. comedy-zombie, Buddy BeBop against the walking dead.

It’s unclear exactly what this film is about, even after two full viewings. The movie – released in 2009 and available on Roku and Amazon Prime Video (where I watched it) – is set in a 1950s American town populated only by greasers and teenage girls in poodle skirts. It usually opens enough for a horror movie – with two teenagers hooking up in a car. But things quickly take a bizarre turn when the couple are attacked by a group of zombies immediately after the greaser gets sucked off. (“If I was a smoker, now would be the time” will forever be this teenager’s last words.) shoving guts into their mouths as heavy metal blares in the background.

For a horror movie, it’s not that scary, and for a comedy, it’s not very funny. And for some reason, the whole thing is shot in black and white. It might have come across as a nod to the 1968 classic night of the living dead if it hadn’t been for the bizarre choice of colorizing random objects like a main character’s bright red shirt, the ketchup and mustard paint scheme of a roller rink, and the garish yellow car in which the teenagers hang out at the start of the film.

Cue the intro credits, and we smash Buddy BeBop, an uncool high school kid who dreams of becoming a rock-‘n’-roll musician. When we first meet him, Buddy is getting ready for a musical performance at the town ice rink. But when the zombies descend on the town, the roller rink quickly turns into a battlefield, forcing Buddy and the little boppers to fight for their lives.

It’s in a field outside of that rink where Dixon’s character has his brief but dramatic moment in the spotlight. Dressed in a sweater vest and Mary Janes, Dixon’s character has no lines and appears only seconds before being knocked to the ground and brutally devoured by two zombies. The camera shoots up her screaming face as blood runs around her eyes and down her ankle, quickly ending the now gubernatorial candidate’s only appearance in the film. (In the credits, his character is only referred to as “Tag Teamed Bopper.”)

Elvis appears in the film’s final act, sent by the Vice President of the United States to protect the town from Buddy. Elvis apparently brought with him some kind of cure for zombie-fication – except he’s only got one dose. How was Elvis supposed to save an entire town from being eaten alive with a dose of zombie cure? It’s not clear. It also fails miserably.

Questions abound after the final credits. Why did they color blood on a victim’s face, but no blood on the zombies? Why do only certain characters have deep southern accents? Why did the Vice President entrust Elvis with saving a town from zombies? Like the Loch Ness Monster or the statues of Easter Island, these are just life’s unanswered mysteries.

“Is it a good movie? We know the answer to that. No, it’s not,” said Chad Ream, a producer at Buddy Bebopin an interview with the Detroit News in May. “Are there any fun parts? It depends on how you find the humor.

That wasn’t the end of Dixon’s acting career, by the way. Her most prominent role was in a web series titled Transitions, an online vampire TV show released in 2010 with 2000s slicked-back hair and eyeliner. Dixon played a vampire named Claire who is, surprisingly, British. However, we are left with little evidence to assess his accent, since the show’s creators pulled nearly every episode from YouTube in early May. Now all that remains exists in clips and screenshots – Dixon twirling a sword, buttoning up his shirt, applying dark lipstick suggestively in a mirror and shouting “Do I have your attention now?” in what kind of sounds like a British accent.

Dixon’s past life as a low-budget actress went largely unnoticed by voters until May. But as his campaign began to gain momentum, excerpts from his appearances on Transitions took off on Twitter and was weaponized by her opponents almost immediately. “Vampire porn actress”, an expert called her. “They were almost as scary as his dangerous agenda,” Michigan’s Democratic Party said of his movies in a attack announcement against her. Critics called her a hypocrite for promoting family values and a hardline stance against ‘sexually explicit’ education– she said she would criminalize adults who allow minors to see drag shows that schools shouldn’t “normalize” discussions on gender identity or sexuality – when she had clearly been involved in projects that were both violent and sexually suggestive. (My friend BeBop, while not exactly explicit, has a lot of horny teens getting along in a weird way. At one point, two teenagers are literally foaming at their mouths doing it doggy style while shouting “Put it in my butt!” in the bathroom of an ice rink.) And My friend BeBopThe zombies of are deliberately gruesome, biting into a pregnant woman’s belly, ripping through the insides of teenagers at the rink, licking blood off the linoleum floor and, my favorite, biting a perverted middle-aged man’s dick. .

His 2008 film LexiBaby—including the Kalamazoo Gazette said, “There’s a good movie somewhere” and that the cocaine scenes were awkward because they were “too obviously grains of sugar” – also drew accusations of hypocrisy. Dixon plays a character named Emma, described on the film’s website as “attractive” and someone who “comes across as a nice person”, but is apparently also “self-centered” with destructive behavior. In the only clips remaining online, which are of the trailerthe viewer sees shots of Dixon’s character watching her boyfriend do lines of cocaine before she straddles him and lifts his shirt.

Dixon said she had never seen Buddy Bebop and never seriously considered acting as a career. She also dismissed suggestions that her past film projects undermined her public platforms, telling Michigan media that her work was made for adults and was unlike something children could access – although excerpts of his work are still readily available online, and My friend BeBop is still available to anyone with the internet and $5 to spare.

A random stint in low-budget B-movies is unlikely to derail Dixon’s run. But the revelation of her acting past is just another reflection of the weirdness of Michigan’s gubernatorial race and the toxicity of primary election campaigns, as well as a reminder that several political hopefuls of this election cycle have had careers as performers, including the day. TV.

It remains to be seen if Buddy BeBop and his horny zombies will feature in future campaigns against Dixon, or if this will all become just a footnote in the story of another messy little political campaign for a field state. of battle in the post-Trump years. .

Still, not everyone knows Dixon as a politician. When I contacted Jon Petro, one of the producers of LexiBabyin early August, he was unaware that Dixon was running for governor and unsure why a reporter would call him about him.

“Oh yeah, that’s right, how is she?” Petro said, once I explained. “I just saw a sign about it.”

It was nine days after winning the Republican primary. I told him this.

“Fuck, wow,” Petro said stopping. “I had no idea she had this far.”

look Barbaric on HBO Max in the US (and Disney+ internationally)

Zach Cregger is the writer and director of Barbaric and I can’t wait to see what he does next. This is the actor-turned-writer-director’s first horror film, and I can’t imagine it will be his last. He’s done a lot of comedy in the past. just like Jordan Pele and it turned out great for horror fans!

The fact that Zach Cregger manages to combine this tacky style of psychological horror with something that turns into very physical gore suits me just fine. Therefore, to say. Especially because both styles have time to evolve. One is not just in a hurry to make room for the other.

Without saying more about their characters in Barbaric, I want to say that you can expect more familiar faces during the 1 hour and 42 minutes of execution. You will see Richard Brake and Kate Bosworthbut for the latter you must really to pay attention. They share a scene though!

Additionally, in fairly small and/or easy to miss roles (or just a voice acting like Kate Siegel in The Midnight Club), we get Sara Paxton (Innkeepers), Will Greenberg, Matthew Patrick Davis and even writer-director Zach Cregger.

This film played in film festivals such as FrightFest in the UK and Sitges in Spain, which only increased the hype. Well you can believe the hype because this horror movie is impressive!

BARBARIC will be released on HBO Max and on VOD in the United States on October 25, 2022, and on Disney+ in many other countries from October 26, 2022.
