Del Toro’s last feature filmmaking effort was in 2017 The shape of water. It won the Oscars for Best Picture of the Year and Best Director, which immediately gave it more prestige. Del Toro turned primarily to a producer role. The talented filmmaker had all eyes on him when the details began to fall for Alley of nightmares.

The 2022 Golden Globes are now upon us and del Toro Alley of nightmares did not score a single nomination. Some analysts were anticipating a nomination for Bradley Cooper or Cate Blanchett. Unfortunately, that never was the case. As a result, his Oscar potential is wasted.

Searchlight Pictures distributor released the Alley of nightmares trailer on September 16. Then, the full trailer premiered on YouTube on November 18. Social media couldn’t help but talk about del Toro’s adaptation of the 1946 novel of the same name. As a result, many awards analysts believed the film may have award potential.

Unfortunately, the problems started with Searchlight Pictures’ marketing efforts. The trailer attracts attention, though the posters do nothing to captivate audiences or show why they have to rush to the theater during the pandemic. This indicates that either the movie is stinky or it just isn’t a very marketable movie.

Cooper and Blanchett are seated in the center of the film. However, Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, and Rooney Mara complete a stellar cast. They all perform phenomenally, but the marketing just wasn’t there to push them.

Alley of nightmares finally released in theaters on December 17th with mixed but leaning positive reviews. He competed with the juggernaut Spider-Man: No Path Home, pushing the film further under the radar. Alley of nightmares earned $ 8 million at the box office against a budget of $ 60 million.

Cooper and Blanchett still deserve praise for their performances, but it’s clear the 2022 Golden Globes didn’t recognize them.

Gender nominations at the 2022 Golden Globes

Alley of nightmares is a neo-noir psychological thriller. There are elements of horror in it, which isn’t too surprising for del Toro. However, the awards show tend to ignore films with genre influences. The 2022 Golden Globes are no exception.

Dune is the only science fiction film to win nominations this year. Spencer has gothic horror elements that also push him into the conversation. Both titles have a much stronger word of mouth buzz and have performed better at the box office.

Hopefully the awards show will feature more genre films in the future. The 2022 Golden Globes isn’t that time, but this year features an assortment of films that are strong in the awards race regardless.
