Zombies are a staple of the horror genre. They are one of the iconic monsters in cinema, alongside vampires, witches and werewolves. Over the years, we’ve seen many zombie movies that terrified audiences with thoughts of the living dead rising up to eat the brains of the living. It’s a scary concept, but in turn, some directors have taken different paths with the famous undead theme, turning them into comedic horror movies or usurping the genre outright.

Here are some of the most popular zombie movies currently streaming that you absolutely must watch. (We apologize in advance for the excessive use of the word ‘death’ in the title – we haven’t named these movies!)

Night of the Living Dead

Probably the greatest zombie of all time, and the movie critics would later describe as the first modern zombie movie, Night of the Living Dead is a revolutionary film on so many levels. Filmmaker George A. Romero, who would become synonymous with the genre, created many key characteristics now associated with zombies (slow walking, rotten appearance, taste for human flesh, and the fact that a bite can bring a zombie infect other people).

A surprisingly simple yet effective horror film, the plot of the film revolves around a group of people trapped in a rural farmhouse who survive wave after wave of zombies. Romero’s first film, it would not only receive several sequels, but would create a cultural phenomenon that subsequently inspired generations of filmmakers. Without Night of the Living Dead, it’s likely that the zombie movie we know today wouldn’t exist, and for that, it’s definitely worth a look.

28 weeks later

We know we can cheat putting a sequel on this list, but the equally fantastic sequel 28 days later is just too good to ignore. Six months after the zombie outbreak that was described in 28 days later, the UN launches an attempt to secure a safe area in London, only to discover that the danger there from zombies is far worse than they might have anticipated.

Although it is debatable whether 28 weeks later surpassing the original, you can’t deny how great a sequel this is – which, given the number of incredibly bad horror movie sequels, is certainly a feat in itself.

Return of the Living Dead

Don’t be fooled by the title, this movie has nothing to do with George A. Romero’s. Night of the Living Dead series. A horror comedy that almost parodies Romero’s zombie movies, Return of the Living Dead tells the story of two clumsy warehouse workers who accidentally release a toxin into the air that turns whoever inhales it into zombies.

Known today for its extensive punk rock soundtrack and for being the first film to feature talk and run zombies, Return of the Living Dead eventually became a cult classic, paving the way for the four sequels that followed.

Army of the dead

One of the most recent big budget zombie movies to come out of Hollywood, that of Zack Snyder Army of the dead merged the heist movie with the zombie genre to create a fun and terrifying film with non-stop action throughout. After a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a team of mercenaries (led by Dave Bautista) attempt to break into the city and recover $ 200 million hidden under a casino infested with the living dead.

Army of the dead introduced the original concept of hyper-intelligent zombies known as “Alphas,” capable of thinking and even emotion, rather than resorting to the brainless, shuffling zombies that audiences know. An interesting cross between the heist and the zombie movie, Army of the dead has two prequels slated for a future release later this year, as well as a potential sequel currently in the works.

Shaun of the Dead

The horror comedy that helped make its director, Edgar Wright, and star, Simon Pegg, to resounding successes, Shaun of the Dead was meant as a tribute of sorts to George A. Romero’s early zombie movies (as you might have guessed from the title alone). Filled with tons of Easter eggs from the famous zombie movies that Wright and Pegg were inspired by, Shaun of the Dead follows a pair of lazy youngsters (Pegg and Nick Frost) as they try to survive a sudden zombie outbreak on the outskirts of London.

The first in Wright and Pegg’s Cornetto trilogy which includes the equally entertaining films Warm down and the end of the world, Shaun of the Dead has been universally acclaimed for its humor and fresh take on zombie flick, and remains one of Wright and Pegg’s most popular films.
